2020 SVA Summer Residency Application

To Whom It May Concern:

I am a second-year undergraduate photography student who is interested in joining SVA for the 2020 SVA Summer Residency Program. I have just completed a spring workshop here at the University of Utah with Kei Ito that concluded a large-scale conceptual project about international financial power in relation to systemic sexual abuse of young women.

I would be an ideal candidate for this program as I am a conceptual photographer and installation/new media artist who is interested in various topics ranging from the use of artificial intelligence in computer visualization to the study of economic systems in relation to the concept of seduction and violence in advertising and social media. SVA, for me, has represented a place where cutting-edge ideas are explored and the results are disseminated to a wider public; my interest in balancing traditional approaches in photographic printing and sculpture with experimental subject matter and techniques such as 3D printing is a strong part of my artistic practice.

As a student I would like to delve into topics such as institutional critique and feminist practice which are topics that are not covered currently in detail here at my university. With faculty at SVA such as Mark Tribe, William Powhida, Laurel Nakadate, Alix Pearlstein, Sheila Pepe, etc., your culture would be inspirational for a young artist like me who is forging new and unexpected paths within my future professional career and studio practice.

Thanks again for your consideration.

Sincerely, Albert Abdul-Barr Wang
